Vilhena is a city in the south-east of Rondonia state, in the western Amazon region of Brazil, sitting on the high Parecis plateau where Amazon rainforest gives way to cerrado savanna near the border with Mato Grosso. It is a regional agricultural and commercial hub on the BR-364 highway - the great road that opened up Rondonia - and serves the surrounding soy and cattle country of the frontier interior. Vilhena is not a tourist destination in the conventional sense but a working city and a stopping point on the long overland routes across the western Amazon, with its own airport (code BVH) providing regional air links. The climate is tropical with a marked wet season (roughly October to April) and a drier season; the drier months are generally easier for overland travel across this vast frontier region.
