AZT is a code associated with Zapatoca, a pretty colonial town in the Santander department of Colombia, high in the eastern Andes north of the town of San Gil. Zapatoca stands on a mountain plateau at around 1,800 metres above sea level, and is famous above all for its gentle, spring-like climate, which has earned it the nickname of the town with the silk-like climate, long a favourite retreat and rest destination. It is a well-preserved old town of whitewashed, flower-decked houses, a handsome main square and church, set in beautiful mountain country of caves, canyons and waterfalls, near the great Chicamocha canyon. Zapatoca is a quiet, charming place, popular for weekends away. Zapatoca is reached by road from the city of Bucaramanga, about a hundred and ten kilometres away. The climate is mild and pleasant all year, thanks to the altitude, cooler than the tropical lowlands.
