Akure is the capital of Ondo State in south-western Nigeria, a busy regional city in the country's tropical rainforest belt, roughly 350 kilometres from Lagos and 700 from Abuja. It is the administrative and commercial hub for a cocoa-growing region and a stepping-off point for one of the area's real highlights - the Idanre Hills, a dramatic granite landscape with an ancient hilltop settlement that sits on UNESCO's tentative list, about half an hour to the south-west. Akure has its own airport with limited connections, but most travellers arrive by road from Lagos or via the larger airports, using the city as a base for Ondo State. The climate is wet and humid much of the year; the drier months from November to March are the easier time to travel.
