Car rental at Gore Bay is not how Manitoulin Island trips work: the island's small towns keep no rental desks, and Gore Bay's airport is a general-aviation field, so visitors bring their cars with them - across the swing bridge at Little Current, open to Highway 6 traffic year-round, or aboard the seasonal Chi-Cheemaun ferry from Tobermory to South Baymouth, where vehicle reservations in summer are close to mandatory. Rent, if you need to, before the island: Sudbury's airport and city branches carry the northeastern Ontario fleets, with Espanola the last mainland town before the bridge. Once across, Manitoulin rewards unhurried driving - Ten Mile Point's lookout, Bridal Veil Falls at Kagawong, Providence Bay's beach and the Cup and Saucer trailhead all string along quiet two-lane roads.
