Trang is a relaxed provincial city on Thailand's Andaman coast, and car rental at Trang Airport (TST) is a practical way to explore a stretch of southern Thailand that sees far fewer visitors than Phuket or Krabi despite similarly striking coastline. The airport is small and regional, with pickup arranged through a handful of desks just outside the compact arrivals area, so visitors are typically on the road within a short walk of the terminal rather than navigating a large hub.
From Trang, the road network fans out toward the coast and its ferry piers. Pak Meng pier, the main jumping-off point for boats to Ko Mook and Ko Kradan, is roughly thirty to forty minutes west, while Kuantan and other smaller piers serving the wider Trang archipelago sit within a similar range depending on the exact route. Ko Lanta is reachable by a combination of road and vehicle ferry further north, generally an hour or more of driving before the crossing itself, so hedge extra time into any island-day plan rather than cutting it close. Thailand drives on the left, a detail that catches many visitors off guard since much of the rest of Southeast Asia drives on the right, so a few careful minutes adjusting before joining any main road is worthwhile.
Visitors driving on a foreign license are strongly encouraged to carry an International Driving Permit alongside it, since Thai authorities and some rental agreements treat the IDP as effectively required rather than optional for non-Thai licenses. Roads directly around Trang and toward the piers are mostly free of tolls, with Thailand's expressway toll network concentrated far away around Bangkok. The southwest monsoon, running roughly from May through October, brings heavier rain and rougher seas that can delay or cancel ferry crossings to the outer islands, so build flexibility into any itinerary that depends on a boat connection, and check forecasts the morning of travel rather than assuming the previous day's calm will hold.
