Car hire at Tambor airport (TMU) is the fast way onto the southern Nicoya Peninsula: the airstrip sits a mile from Tambor village, and the rental desks cluster in the small arrivals building next to baggage claim with the cars parked in the adjacent lot. Aggregators list Alamo, Avis, Budget, National, Sixt and Thrifty among the operators serving TMU alongside Costa Rican firms. From here Montezuma is roughly 30 to 40 minutes and Santa Teresa about an hour - and the honest advice is to take a 4x4 or high-clearance SUV: stretches of the Cobano to Santa Teresa road remain unpaved, and in the May to November green season the side roads earn their reputation. Book ahead in dry-season peak weeks; this is a small airfield with a finite lot.
