Rent a car at San Luis Potosi International Airport (SLP) from a genuinely full desk line-up: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and National all list Ponciano Arriaga airport locations, with counters in the terminal and lots a short walk out - unusual depth for a mid-size Mexican airport, thanks to the Bajio's industrial traffic. The colonial centre, 15-20 minutes south, deserves a car-free evening once parked, but the region rewards driving: the Huasteca Potosina's waterfalls and canyons spread four to five hours east around Ciudad Valles, and Real de Catorce's cobbled ghost-town streets sit 2.5 hours north, reached through a one-way tunnel with a rough final approach. Use the toll (cuota) highways between cities and keep long rural legs to daylight.
