Car hire in Plymouth is a city-branch affair: Enterprise and Europcar both list Plymouth locations, and with the city's own airport closed since 2011, fly-and-drive visitors come through Exeter or Bristol and collect there or on arrival in town. Plymouth's rental market serves two patterns especially well. Ferry passengers - Brittany Ferries sails from Millbay to Roscoff and Santander - often want a car on the England side without shipping their own, and the moor-and-coast circuit rewards wheels: Dartmoor's open roads begin twenty minutes from the Hoe, the Tamar Valley and Cornish coves spread west across the bridge, and the South Hams beaches lie south-east. In the city itself, park-and-walk works better - the Barbican's lanes and the waterfront are best on foot.
