Car rental in Paranagua runs through Brazil's national networks and local agencies with city offices rather than a big airport operation - Paranagua's own airfield has no airline service, so fly-and-drive trips start at Curitiba, about 90 kilometres up the escarpment, where Afonso Pena International carries the full desk line-up. The road between them matters as much as the destination: the modern BR-277 climbs the Serra do Mar efficiently, while the old Estrada da Graciosa winds through protected rainforest as one of southern Brazil's loveliest drives - and the Serra Verde Express train covers the same mountains spectacularly if you would rather ride one way. Note that Ilha do Mel, the region's star attraction, is car-free: drive to Pontal do Sul, park securely and cross by boat.
