There is no car rental counter waiting at Zouerate's Tazadit Airport (OUZ): this is a mining-country airstrip in Mauritania's far north whose only scheduled link is a domestic Mauritania Airlines run to Nouadhibou, and ground transport works through arrangement rather than walk-up desks. Zouerate exists for iron ore - the famous ore train, among the longest in the world, hauls from these mines to the coast and draws the adventurous travellers who pass through - and independent visitors reach the town aboard that train, on the domestic flight, or overland by 4x4 from Atar with a driver who knows the desert. If you need a vehicle in Zouerate itself, arrange it ahead through a Mauritanian operator or your hosts; for the Adrar's dunes and gorges to the south, hire the 4x4 and driver together.
