Rent a car in Oruro around the city centre rather than any airport hall: Europcar lists an Oruro downtown location, and the city's compact rental market suits the way travellers actually arrive - by road from La Paz or by rail, since Oruro's railway station is a downtown landmark and the departure point of the Expreso del Sur across the altiplano toward Uyuni and Villazon. A common pattern is train one way and car the other, or a rental collected in the centre after arriving by rail. Remember the altitude: Oruro sits about 3,700 metres up, where engines lose power and new arrivals should pace themselves before long drives. And in February, the Oruro Carnival - one of South America's great festivals - absorbs every vehicle and room for days; book far ahead or avoid the dates entirely.
