Car rental in Marrakech downtown is a real alternative to the airport queue: agencies cluster in Gueliz - the new town along Avenue Mohammed VI and around Avenue Mohammed V - where local firms often undercut airport rates and deliver cars to hotels and to the edge-of-medina drop points riads recommend. At Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK), Hertz, Sixt and Europcar all list desks, so both patterns work: land-and-drive, or a car-free medina stay with a downtown pickup for the road-trip leg. Do not plan to drive into the medina itself - it is a maze of pedestrian lanes; park at the lot your riad recommends instead. For the Atlas passes, the Ourika valley, Ouzoud falls or the Tizi n'Tichka route toward Ait Ben Haddou, any solid car works most of the year; high passes occasionally close in winter snow.
