The city itself, up on the Huila plateau, is the base for two icons: the Serra da Leba pass, whose hairpin switchbacks drop off the escarpment 30 to 45 minutes away, and the Fenda da Tundavala, where the plateau simply ends in a near-1,000-metre drop to the coastal plain. A standard car manages the paved runs to both viewpoints in the dry season - May to September is the window - but excursions beyond the asphalt, toward Namibe's desert or tribal-country tracks, justify the with-driver 4x4 norm.
