Car rental at Leknes Airport is the classic way into the Lofoten islands: Avis and Hertz both list desks at the small terminal, with Lofoten's spectacular E10 road connecting Leknes to Reine and the fishing villages at the road's southern end, and to Svolvaer in the northeast. Fleets on the islands are genuinely small, so summer availability is the real constraint - June to August bookings should be made weeks or months ahead, not days. Distances look short on the map but driving is slow and scenic: allow a full day for the Leknes-Reine-Nusfjord circuit with photo stops. In winter, cars come on proper winter tyres and the E10 is kept open, but wind closures and icy causeways reward flexible plans and daylight-hours driving.
