Karlshamn is a coastal town in Blekinge, in southern Sweden, and it is worth clearing up one point before anything else: the "XYO" code sometimes associated with Karlshamn refers to its railway station, not an airport, so there is no on-site air gateway or airport rental desk here. Most visitors flying in instead land at Ronneby Airport, a small regional field roughly twenty to twenty-five minutes east along the coast, where a handful of rental companies operate out of a compact terminal, and the short drive into Karlshamn follows an easy coastal road.
Once in Karlshamn, a car is the practical way to explore Blekinge's mix of harbor towns, archipelago access points and inland forest roads. The E22 motorway runs along the southern coast, linking Karlshamn to Ronneby and Kristianstad to the west, roughly fifty minutes to an hour away, and to Karlskrona, the regional capital and naval town, about thirty to forty minutes east. Smaller roads branch off toward the archipelago's ferry points and quieter beach villages, generally easy, well-signed routes through a gently rolling landscape.
Driving is on the right throughout Sweden, and roads here are well maintained by international standards, whether on the E22 or the smaller provincial routes threading through Blekinge's forests and coastal villages. Winter tires are legally required roughly from October through April, and rental fleets serving Ronneby and the surrounding region are fitted accordingly during that window, so this is generally handled without extra requests. Fuel stations are frequent along the coast and in Karlshamn itself, thinning out somewhat on quieter inland routes, and the difference between a long, light Scandinavian summer evening and a short, dark winter afternoon changes the character of driving here considerably depending on when you visit. Visitors combining Karlshamn with a wider Blekinge itinerary generally find the province's roads calm and uncrowded outside the peak summer weeks, when coastal towns and archipelago ferry points draw noticeably more local traffic.
