Chiang Mai is the cultural capital of northern Thailand, a walled old city surrounded by mountains, temples and a modern sprawl of neighborhoods, and a rental car opens up the surrounding countryside far more easily than relying on taxis or ride-hailing for longer trips. Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) sits just south of the old city and handles a full range of domestic and international flights, with car rental counters there run by international and local companies, alongside additional rental offices scattered through the city itself for those who prefer to pick up after settling in.
From Chiang Mai, the region's signature drives head into the mountains: the Mae Hong Son loop, a multi-day route through Pai and on toward the Myanmar border, is famous for its hundreds of curves and dramatic elevation changes, typically taking a full day or more each direction depending on stops. Closer destinations like Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest point, or the hill town of Mae Rim, are reachable within an hour or two, making a rental practical even for a single day trip from the city.
Thailand drives on the left, a detail that catches out many visitors from right-hand-drive countries, and an International Driving Permit alongside your home license is strongly recommended, since local police and rental companies increasingly expect one from foreign visitors. Mountain roads north and west of Chiang Mai are narrow, steep and full of switchbacks, so a smaller vehicle or one you feel confident maneuvering on winding grades is worth requesting. Monsoon season, roughly June through October, brings heavy rain and occasional landslide risk on mountain routes, so checking conditions before any loop drive during those months is a sensible precaution for anyone renting a car out of Chiang Mai. Traffic within the city itself can be congested during rush hours near the old city moat, so many visitors treat the rental mainly as a tool for reaching the mountains rather than for daily errands inside town.
