Cape Town is one of the world's great self-drive cities, and a rental car is close to essential for seeing the Cape properly. The peninsula alone justifies it: Chapman's Peak Drive curls along cliffs between Hout Bay and Noordhoek on one of the most spectacular toll roads anywhere, and the route continues south to the lighthouses and baboons of Cape Point. The Winelands are forty-five minutes to an hour away, with Stellenbosch and Franschhoek linked by mountain passes that are destinations in themselves, and the N2 heads east toward Hermanus and the start of the Garden Route. South Africa drives on the left, a genuine adjustment if you are coming from right-side countries; give yourself a calm first hour, and remember the driver sits on the right and overtakes on the right. A home license printed in English with a photo is generally accepted; otherwise carry an International Driving Permit alongside it. Local driving culture has a few features worth knowing. Fuel stations are attended rather than self-service, with attendants pumping fuel, checking oil and cleaning windscreens, and a small tip for the service is customary. Traffic lights are called robots, and when power interruptions darken them, the rule is to treat the junction as a four-way stop, which locals do with surprising discipline. Park in attended lots or where car guards operate, and keep valuables out of sight, the same street sense that applies in any large city. Manual gearboxes are common in South African fleets, so reserve an automatic early if you need one. Distances on Cape itineraries are longer than they look, and the light changes fast at dusk; plan rural legs for daylight and the driving here will rank among the best memories of the trip. Closer to town, the car also earns easy wins: the penguins at Boulders Beach, Kirstenbosch garden concerts and the Constantia wine estates all sit within a relaxed half-hour of the city bowl.
