From the rental area you are minutes from the A1 and A27, the two arteries that define driving in the northwest: Bremerhaven and its harbor museums are about fifty minutes north via the A27, Hamburg is roughly an hour and a quarter east on the A1, and the East Frisian coast with its tidal flats and ferry ports opens up to the west. Germany drives on the right, EU licenses are valid as issued, and most visitors from elsewhere can drive on a home license for a tourist stay, with an International Driving Permit recommended when the license is not in a Latin script. The autobahn deserves its reputation but rewards calm: some stretches have no blanket speed limit, yet the advisory speed is 130 km/h, limits appear frequently around junctions and roadworks, and the iron rule is to keep right except when overtaking. Two pieces of German regulation matter locally. Bremen's inner districts form an environmental zone, an Umweltzone, that requires a green emissions sticker on the windshield; cars registered in Germany, including rental fleets, carry one as standard, but it is worth a glance before you drive into the center. And Germany's winter rule is situational rather than calendar-based: when conditions are wintry, the car must be on winter or all-season tires, so confirm the fit if you rent between October and Easter. Fuel stations are self-service, with payment inside or at the pump by card. City parking is structured and honest; use the signed garages near the Schnoor and the market square, and let the car do its best work on the open roads between the Hanseatic cities and the sea.
