Braganca anchors the far northeast of Portugal, capital of the wild Tras-os-Montes region, and it is honest to say there is no practical way to explore this corner of the country without a car. The reward for driving here is enormous: the Montesinho Natural Park begins at the city's doorstep with some of Portugal's emptiest and most beautiful roads, the vineyard terraces of the Douro lie about an hour south, and Porto is roughly two hours away along the A4 motorway that now runs the full route. Spain is close enough to make lunch abroad routine, with the border toward Zamora province only a short drive east. Portugal drives on the right, EU licenses are valid as issued, and visitors from outside the EU should carry an International Driving Permit alongside a home license to keep rental counters and any checks simple. The single most important local detail is Portugal's electronic tolling. Sections of the A4 and other motorways in the north use gantry-only tolls with no cash booths at all; charges are collected automatically by transponder. Sort this out at the rental desk before you drive off, either with the car's toll device or a prepaid arrangement, because retrofitting payment after the fact is tedious. Once that is handled, the region is a driver's dream: traffic is light, distances between granite villages are short, and viewpoints arrive faster than you can stop for them. Two seasonal notes are worth respecting. Winters in these highlands are real, with fog and morning ice on the high roads, so allow margin between November and March. And summer festival weekends can briefly fill the small local fleet, so book ahead if your dates are fixed. Manual transmissions dominate here as everywhere in Portugal; reserve an automatic early if you need one. Fuel stations thin out in the deep countryside, so fill up in Braganca before a full day among the mountain villages.
