Bourges sits almost exactly at the center of France, a UNESCO-listed cathedral city in the old province of Berry, and a rental car is the key that makes its position pay off. The A71 autoroute passes the city, putting Paris about two and a half hours north and Clermont-Ferrand a little over an hour south, while quiet departmental roads fan out toward some of the most rewarding short drives in the country. The Sancerre wine villages are around forty-five minutes northeast, the first Loire Valley chateaux sit within about an hour, and the Sologne forests begin just up the road. France drives on the right. EU and EEA licenses are valid as they are; visitors from elsewhere can drive on a home license for a tourist stay, with an International Driving Permit or official translation recommended if the license is not in French, and some rental desks ask to see one. The autoroutes are tolled at peage barriers that take bank cards, so transiting the A71 is simple, but much of the pleasure around Bourges lies on the free departmental network where tolls never appear. Manual gearboxes remain the French default: if you need an automatic, reserve it early rather than hoping at the counter. In town, the medieval center rewards walking more than driving; its lanes are narrow and partly pedestrianized, so park at one of the signed car parks on the edge of the old town and explore on foot. Every April the Printemps de Bourges music festival fills the city and rental demand jumps with it, as do summer weekends when the Loire and Sancerre draw visitors through. Booking ahead in those windows keeps choice wide. Roundabouts are constant companions on French roads; yield to traffic already circulating, signal on exit, and central France quickly feels like it was designed for unhurried driving.
