Barranquilla sits at the mouth of the Magdalena River, halfway along Colombia's Caribbean coast, which makes it one of the best road-trip bases in the country. With a rental car you can reach the walled city of Cartagena in about two hours heading southwest, or Santa Marta and the gateway to Tayrona's beaches in roughly two hours east, all on coastal highways with sea air through the window. Pickups are available both at Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport (BAQ), which lies south of the city, and at desks in the northern hotel districts. Colombia drives on the right. A valid home-country license is generally accepted for tourist stays, but carrying an International Driving Permit alongside it smooths both rentals and any roadside checks, especially if your license is not in Spanish. Two local practices matter more than anything else. First, Barranquilla, like most large Colombian cities, applies pico y placa rules: rotating restrictions that bar certain plate numbers from circulating at peak hours. The schedule changes periodically, so ask the rental desk how the current rotation affects your plate before you plan commuting hours. Second, the coastal highways use cash-friendly toll booths at regular intervals; small bills keep those stops quick. City driving is assertive, with buses and motorbikes weaving confidently, so most visitors keep the car parked during Carnival crowds and use it for the open road, where it earns its keep. Use attended parking lots, known locally as parqueaderos, rather than street parking overnight. Air conditioning is essential in the coastal heat and standard in most fleets, but confirm it anyway. If your trip touches Carnival season in February or March, book well ahead: the city fills, fleets shrink, and the best vehicles disappear first. Outside those weeks, availability is comfortable and the coast is yours. Fuel stations are frequent along the coastal corridor, but top up before longer inland legs and give the spare tire a glance before any highway day.
